Roman Glass Beads are made by excavating fragments of discarded glass products produced during the time when the ancient Roman Empire was flourishing, shaping them, drilling holes, and making them into beads.
Our Roman glass beads are made from glass pieces excavated in the northern part of Afghanistan and near Bamyan, which was a key location on the Silk Road at the time, and are purchased directly from Afghans outside of Afghanistan.
Because they have been underground for over 1,000 years, many of them sparkle beautifully because the light reflects diffusely on the surface due to chemical changes caused by the ingredients in the soil.
